India is the largest producer of fruits in the world and is known as fruit basket of world. The major fruits grown in India are Mango, Grapes, Apple, Apricot, Orange, Banana, Citrus, Avocado, Guava, Litchi, Papaya, Pear, Plum, Pomegranate, Pineapple, Almond, Walnut, Water melons, etc. Many of the traditional fruits such as Khirnee, Barhal,Kaith, Phalsa, etc. are getting disappeared due to preference of younger generation to other fruits, non-availability in the market due to short supply and changing socio-economic conditions. The younger generation has not even heard the names of some of these fruits or even if they have heard about the fruit they have no idea about the plant or the fruit as such.
The fruit conservatory in SNU Botanic Garden provides an opportunity to see most of the fruit plants at one place, the largest collection of plants in NCR. The Fruit Plants Garden, has a total of 65 variety of fruit plants such as Aonla, Amra, Almond, Apple, Apricot, Avocado, Bel, Ber, Banana, Barhal, Chinese Orange, Custard apple, Dragon Fruit, Fig, Grapes, Guava, Jack fruit, Jamun, Rose apple, Jangal Jalebi, Kair Karonda, Khirnee, Lasora, Lemon, Litchi, Kagzi neebu/Lime, Sweet lemon, Mandarin (Kinnow), Orange, Mango (Amrapali and Dasheri), Moringa (Sainjan), Papaya, Passion fruit (purple and red), Pear, Persimmon (Amarphal/Dyospyros kaki), Phalsa, Plum, Pomegranate, Pomelo (Chakotara), Star fruit (Kamrakh), Sapota, Walnut, West Indian Cherry, Wood apple (Kaith), etc. Many of the fruit plants have already started to flower and bear fruits.
